Heavy rigging for the fire service

This Rigging course has been specifically designed for the fire service by bridging the theoretical and practical knowledge of the Master Rigger and WreckMaster qualifications with the realities of operating as a first responder.  It is important to recognize that the emergency scene is a highly complex and changing environment and the special teams that operate in it must implement safe practices while utilizing critical thinking to develop a rescue plan.

This course is structured into modules designed to meet the specific needs of your organization. Participants will learn to adhere to ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) standards, ensuring your institution achieves OSHA compliance.

The primary objective of this course is to provide the foundation for which your firefighters will make these key decisions. The curriculum is broken down into Fundamentals and Advanced heavy rigging.

1) Heavy Rigging Fundamentals

  • Basic standards of rigging safety
  • Selecting the proper equipment to rig a load
  •  How to inspect rigging equipment
  • Proper rigging equipment storage and maintenance
  • The foundation of every speciality is the understanding of the equipment, its capabilities and how to care for it.  Participants will have varying levels of experience but the goal of this portion of the course is to leave all involved comfortable with the equipment. It is our goal to have each participant walk out confident with different types of rigging equipment, their design factors and uses, as well as inspection, maintenance and storage.

2) Advanced Heavy Rigging

This been divided into three subsections each component designed specifically to help firefighters safely perform rescue operations when conditions are not optimal. Lifting the load combines equipment knowledge with load calculations so firefighters truly understand the uses and limitations of the rigging equipment that your fire department uses. The second component concentrates on “Damage Rigging” vehicles or heavy loads with varying dimensions. Once these two concepts are fully explained the final two days include “Paratech Training” (similar to Paratech University) as well as real-world scenarios that will have your members working as a team to mitigate these training scenarios.

  • Moving or Lifting the Load
  • Calculating the load and center of gravity
  • Understanding Friction
  •  Recognize what equipment ratings really mean
  • Determine total block loading using line angle factor multipliers
  • Rigging for a vertical lift
  •  Below the hook lifting devices
  • Damage Rigging
  • Recognizing the additional risks of damaged loads
  • Calculating Anchor ability of recovery vehicles or anchors
  •  Dealing with heavier weight classes of vehicles (Under/Over-rides)
  • Upright cars in complex scenarios
  • Work effectively on scene with a recovery team
  • Paratech Equipment Training
  • Paratech Tool Lab Station Rotations-Learn about the Paratech tools,
  • Vehicle Stabilization using Rescue Struts with car on roof and side;
  • Heavy Vehicle Lifting & Stabilization Station (Rescue & Hydraulic Struts)
  • Building Shoring using Rakers, Flying Rakers and Woodless Raker Systems;
  • Rigging Station: using Monopod and Bipod
  • Air Bag Heavy Lifting Station
  • Final Exercise: Putting it all together using skills learned to move heavy objects.

At the conclusion of the in class and practical components of the course firefighters will be able to operate with a high level of confidence at these high risk, low frequency events

A course lead along with two experienced SOCC instructors will deliver this  our day  course and will ensure that everything is set up prior to participants arriving to the hands on portion of training.

The lead for this course has Qualified as a  Master Rigger that has Certification as an Advanced Rigger.

SOCC is fully insured and will provide a certificate of insurance prior to the course.

paratech EQUIPMENT trAINING-CERTIFIED BY PARATECH INC.

The Special Operations Consulting Canada (SOCC) “Lifting, Stabilization, Shoring Training” is a Paratech authorized course that is a two day hands on event using the most current heavy lifting, shifting, stabilizing, and building shoring techniques. This is also supported by your local Paratech rep who will provide additional equipment for the course.

SOCC is also offering a new “Heavy Rescue & Rigging” course that could be added prior to the Paratech Training class. Any fire service that wants to have safe and effective heavy rescue capabilities should have this  in addition to truly understand the equipment following ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) standards.. This includes chains, hooks, shackles along with angles and safety factors that will keep your staff and civilians safe during training and rescue operations. It is critically important to have a thorough understanding of rigging equipment that your department offers and its limitations as well as care and maintenance. Paratech Training and Heavy Rigging courses have been designed by Mike who has Master Rigger qualifications as well as Wreckmaster Heavy Duty certifications that meet the requirements of OSHA following ASME standards.

Day one will include registration and introductions followed by a classroom session prior to the hands-on training that involves educating the participants on the techniques that will be demonstrated and the theories behind them.

The participants will then be placed into four squads. Beginning Day One and continuing through Day Two each squad will rotate through various Learning Stations. SOCC’s Paratech training will end with all stations integrated into an ultimate final exercise technical rescue challenge where you will put together all the skills learned.

The Hands-on Learning Stations include:

  • Paratech Tool Lab Station Rotations
  • Learn about the Paratech tools
  • Vehicle Stabilization using Rescue Struts with car on roof and another station with a car on its side
  • Heavy Vehicle Lifting & Stabilization Station: using Rescue Struts & Hydraulic Struts
  • Building Shoring Station: using Rakers, Flying Rakers and Woodless Raker Systems
  • Rigging Station: using Monopod and Bipod
  • Air Bag Heavy Lifting Station: using Maxiforce® and Multiforce Air Lifting Bags
  •  Final Exercise: Putting it all together using skills learned to move heavy objects.

SOCC presents a course that has been approved by Paratech Inc and their training department and all SOCC instructors for this course are all Paratech approved instructors. Our instructors are all very passionate instructors that have real world experience working on Rescue companies.

Cost effective training: There are two different ways that you can run this course. Your Fire Department could be a host department in which we would train five of your selected staff and then it would be open enrolment for any applicants. Second option would be to train approximately 30 of your own staff if your training division decided to cover the entire cost. If needed we could add more people and simply have more stations with more instructors which would increase the cost slightly.

SOCC is fully insured and will provide a certificate of insurance prior to the course.

HEAVY VEHICLE RESCUE & RAPID EXTRICATION TECHNIQUES

RAPID EXTRICATION

This program was designed by our founder that is a member of a Two-Time world champion Auto Extrication Team (and has spent most of his career on the busiest stretch of highway in North America-the 401). Todays newer vehicles are loaded with ultra high strength steel , lithium ion batteries and pressurized cylinders for airbags.

Rapid extrication focuses on making space to remove the trapped occupants as quickly as possible. Cutting multiple posts and "taking glass" on all windows is inefficient and absolutely not necessary.  This also focuses on fast and effective stabilization techniques.

There is a great emphasis  on proper patient care in this instruction.  Rapid extrication with excellent patient care by BLS providers makes a massive difference in survival.

HEAVY VEHICLE

Heavy vehicle rescue is high stakes, even in training. Uplifting a  heavy vehicle that may be on top of a passenger vehicle is not an every day task. This will happen in every community so rescuers need to be prepared. Heavy Recovery operators may not be able to access you quickly, or may not have the proper training themselves, even though we may think they do.

SOCC will teach a Five Step approach that was originated from our great friend Billy Leach of "Big Rig Rescue" that will teach participants to mitigate the toughest emergencies. Some material supplied was authored in conjunction with Mike Tesarski and Billy Leach.

If you work with your area Heavy Wrecker operators I'd encourage them to attend and assist with this course as you will be working shoulder to shoulder with these operators

SOCC is also fully insured and will provide a certificate of insurance prior to the course.
